Mixed results for local clubs

Benoni Northerns (BNFC) and Old Bens football club’s senior first and reserve sides were in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league action on September 2.

Old Bens travelled to Bedfordview to take on Olympia, while BNFC welcomed second-placed Luso Africa to the Northern areas.

The Bens reserve XI defeated Olympia 3-1 but the first XI did not experience that winning feeling.

They went down 1-2.

“We played good football and had the majority of possession but we were not clinical in front of the goal,” said coach Raymond Cloete.

“It has hurt our chances of a top two finish on the table and makes this weekend’s derby even more interesting.”

Bens, currently in fourth place, will hope to pick up all three points against their rivals at Currin Park on Saturday.

Northerns’ first XI, currently third place in the Super League table, could move up to second place pending the outcome of an ELFA disciplinary hearing following Saturday’s match against Luso Africa.

The match was abandoned three-quarters into the game by the referee as a result of ill-discipline towards the officials from some of the opposing players.

BNFC should get the three points as they were 3-2 up when the referee called the game off.

The club’s reserve XI won 3-1 in the preceding match.

• The BNFC first team won their ELFA Super Cup semi-final 1-0 against Olympia in Kempton Park on the night of August 29.

Their reserve team lost 2-0 in their semi-final against rivals Old Bens.
