Northerns defeat league leaders Randburg to narrow the gap

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Senior Super League achieved a major scalp in the shape of table-toppers Randburg at Northern Areas on Saturday, July 29.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s men secured a 4-2 victory over the league leaders thanks to a goal from left midfielder Marlon Meunul and a hat-trick from talismanic forward, Brogan Shrimpton.

According to van den Berg, the game could have gone either way with both teams locked at 2-2 halfway into the second stanza.

“The boys stuck to our game plan and in the second half I opened up the attack.

“Randburg didn’t take their chances and we did,” he said.

The win is a big one for Northerns who now find themselves just two points behind Randburg on the table although BNFC has played an extra game.

In fact, only six points separate fourth-placed Alberton from first-placed Randburg, setting up an exciting final stretch of league matches.

Van den Berg has stressed the need to pick up all six points in their next two fixtures against Olympia away on August 5, and Highlands Park at home, on August 17.

A knock-out ELFA Cup quarter-final match against Kempton Park is sandwiched in between those two important clashes.

It will be played on August 12, in Kempton Park.

• Meanwhile, fifth-placed Old Bens Football Club came back from 3-0 down against Germiston City Football Club in Delville to draw 3-3 on Saturday.

Their next match sees them take on Boksburg at Currin Park on August 5.

The match is scheduled to start at 3.30pm.
