Tennis tournament for youngsters ran well

The Tennis South Africa (TSA) National Junior Series, now rebranded as the Growthpoint Super 8 Series, kicked into gear last week with the start of the winter leg of three key TSA junior tournaments.

The Growthpoint Super 8 Series consists of eight regional events across the country.

The Gauteng East leg of the Growthpoint Super 8 was played at the Gauteng East Tennis Complex in Lakefield from July 12 to July 17 with junior national ranking points up for grabs.

Each of these tournaments saw boys and girls in the u-10, u-12, u-14, u-16 and u-18 age categories competing at different tennis clubs throughout their respective regions.

Ken Smith, president of the Gauteng East Tennis Association, said: “The tournament ran well thanks to the work from my various colleagues.

“It was supported enthusiastically by players all over the country.

“On the competitive side of things tennis is alive and kicking.

“It is just on the social side and at club level that needs some reviving.

“Junior tennis is still vibrant and the standard of competition is high.”
