Northerns eye more wins in ‘home stretch’

Sitting in second position on the Eastern Local Football Asociation's (ELFA) Super League table, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first team is looking strong heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

With a number of teams circling beneath them like hungry sharks, some with extra games in hand, the competition in the league is certainly heating up.

The next two weekends will be crucial in coach Jannie van den Berg’s team’s season.

Third placed Alberton, BNFC’s opponents this weekend (Saturday, July 22), will definitely put up a stern test at Northern Areas followed by another tough clash against table-toppers Randburg, on July 29.

Van den Berg’s men, however, still had a job to do this past Saturday, July 15, when they travelled to the City Stadium in Boksburg.

Boksburg, in 11th position on the table, were not expected to put up much of a fight and that proved to be the case when they were thrashed 6-0 by BNFC.

“In view of the next two games I changed up the side a bit and introduced a few more youngsters to see what they could do.

“They stuck to the game plan well and got us the all-important three points.

“We are in the home stretch now and will take every win with open arms.”

Coach Darren Lee’s BNFC reserve team, who are also in second place in their league behind Randburg, also romped to victory in Boksburg.

They returned to Benoni with a 7- 0 result.

The reserves will open Saturday’s proceedings against Alberton at 1.45pm, followed by the First team clash at 3.30pm.
