Gauteng schools giddy-up and go

On Saturday, June 10, the South African National Equestrian School Association (Sanesa) Ekurhuleni region held their first ever school parade at their fourth qualifier at Eaton Farm in Sun Valley, Midrand.

It was supported by numerous schools and riders from the Ekurhuleni region.

“It was a huge success and a great way to end our 2017 season,” said Sharlee Gould, Sanesa Ekurhuleni chairperson.

Sanesa is a vibrant and dynamic organisation, acknowledged by the South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF) and Sascoc, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Gauteng Provincial Sport Council, the Ekurhuleni Sports Council and the Department of Education.

Gauteng has five regions and each region holds up to four multi-discipline competitions in the first six months of the year.

Then the Top Eight riders, with the most accumulated points in each discipline, go forward to represent their region at the Gauteng finals in August.

The Top 12 riders with the most accumulated points in each discipline, will then progress to represent Gauteng at the annual Sanesa National Championships during September and October.

“Our Ekurhuleni region is strongly supported by over 80 active schools,” said Gould.

“Our competitions are quite big, boasting over 800 entries over their competing weekends while our average entries (riders) per class vary between 10 and 30, offering 55 classes per day over two days (110 classes over a weekend),” she added.

It is not essential for anyone to actually own their own horse or pony to participate in Sanesa events – many riding school pupils compete with success at events on borrowed horses or ponies.

“Sanesa is striving to ensure that it is an all-inclusive organisation and that anyone who wishes to compete is not disadvantaged in any way,” saidGould.
