Bafana Bafana dream comes true for Lorenzo Gordinho

Another Benonian has pulled the men’s national football team’s jersey over his head.

Former Benoni High School learner Lorenzo Gordinho (23) has added his name to a list of players from this neck of the woods who have donned the Bafana Bafana badge on their chest, joining the likes of Rowen Fernandez, Bradley Grobler, Pollen Ndlanya and Jabu Mahlangu.

Gordinho, who made his name in the centre of defence at Kaizer Chiefs, started alongside Rivaldo Coetzee at the back for coach Stuart Baxter in South Africa’s 2-1 loss against Zambia in an international friendly match on Tuesday, June 13 at the Moruleng Stadium, outside Rustenburg.

He told the City Times in August 2013 about his great desire to one day represent the national team and finally, after being drafted into the squad on a few occasions, Gordinho achieved his dream last week.

He even had a terrific opportunity late on in the friendly match to get his name on the score sheet and find an equaliser for Bafana Bafana, but was denied by a fine stop from Zambian goalkeeper Allan Chibwe.

Despite the loss Gordinho was pleased to make his international debut.

“It was a good feeling [to represent the national side],” he told the City Times.

“It felt like a dream come true to put on that jersey and not only represent myself, but the country too.”

Asked what was going through his head before taking to the pitch Gordinho said: “I was excited to play.

“I had the same feeling before I played my first Soweto Derby for Chiefs, an amazing feeling.”

Reflecting on his own performance the defender said: “I thought I had a good game, but it [the defeat] was a lesson that I will take with me and look to improve on at international level.”

He added that his main goal with the national team is to become a regular part of the squad and then to establish himself further.

Asked what the reaction back home in Benoni has been like Gordinho said: “I got a huge, positive reaction from friends and family and everyone who knows me.

“It was something I will always remember.

“Being able to have their support and recognition gave me a huge boost.”

Most young football players in Benoni harbour dreams of playing professional football and someday representing their country and Gordinho offered them some advice:

“Always work hard, follow your passion and dreams, but, most importantly, trust yourself and believe in the process of progression in your career and life.”
