ELFA weekend football round-up

Benoni’s two Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League first sides, Benoni Northern Football Club (BNFC) and Old Ben's Football Club, were both in action this past week.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s Old Ben’s XI, drew 1-1 at their Currin Park home base against Highlands Park on the night of June 13 and then met Primrose’s Luso Africa on June 17, also at Old Ben’s.

On Tuesday, Cloete said his team was “teaching Highlands a football lesson for 88 minutes at 1-0 up” before letting in a late equalising goal that forced a 1-1 draw.

His team then struggled to find the back of the net on Saturday as a first-half own goal saw Ben’s miss out on an opportunity to go second on the log as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat.

The club’s reserve team lost 2-1 to Highlands on Tuesday and drew 2-2 with Luso on Saturday.

The Old Bens’ teams will play Corinthians away on June 24.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s BNFC first side squared up against Robertsham at Northern Areas on Saturday and were seeking revenge after ending on the wrong side of a 5-2 score line when the two sides met for the first time in the 2017 campaign at Bawden Park back in March.

This time, as fate would have it, the same result would occur, but in favour of the Benonian hosts.

After going 2-0 down early, a relatively inexperienced Northerns outfit (with a number of first team players absent) bounced back to secure all three points with a 5-2 victory.

Four of those goals came in the second stanza.

Van den Berg told the City Times that he used some choice Afrikaans words with his players at half time, with the score 2-1 in Robertsham’s favour, and that seemed to gee up the team in the second half.

“Maybe that spurred or scared them into life,” he joked.

Coach Darren Lee’s reserve BNFC XI drew 1-1.

Northerns’ teams will travel to Katlehong on Saturday, June 24 to play against Zwide.
