Paddlers set to flock to Homestead

The Gauteng Canoe Marathon selection trials will be held at the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club (ERK) at Homestead Dam on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23.

There the Gauteng team will be selected to represent the province at the upcoming South African Marathon Championships, which takes place in August.

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has identified South Africa for the 2017 World Marathon Canoe Championships.

These championships will take place in Pietermaritzburg in the first week of September.

Paddlers throughout South Africa are training in the hope of qualifying to participate in the event in our backyard, and club races are geared up for marathon training and preparation.

The venue for the South African Marathon event will be a test run for the World Marathon championships in Pietermaritzburg.

Those who qualify will be entitled to participate in the World Marathon Champs in September.

There are also be a simultaneous run of World Master Canoe Championships for age groups above the competitive age (from 35 years old upwards).

The “Masters” may race without qualification up to the age of 70 (sub-veteran, veteran, sub-masters, masters, sub-Grand Masters, Grand masters and Great Grand Masters).
