Meyer is the man at Ebotse

Southern Cape professional, Breyten Meyer, signed for a seven-under-par 65 final round to take his total to 13-under and win the South to East Challenge, co-sanctioned by the Big Easy Tour (BET) and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Tour, at Ebotse Links on Friday.

The tournament took place from Wednesday, June 7 to Friday, June 9.

Trailing by a shot going into a delayed third round in Benoni, Meyer opened his final round with pars on the first and second holes before he made birdie on third.

Then an unwanted bogey on the fourth hole got into his card but that was quickly compensated for when he made consecutive birdies on holes five, six and seven.

The back nine proved to be smooth-sailing as Meyer continued to fire in birdies and pars en route to his maiden victory on the BET circuit.

“I started quite badly today because the greens were frozen and we were delayed for an hour,” he said after the round. “I actually hit some bad shots in those first three holes and I phoned my coach afterwards, and he said I should go through my routines – warm up again and basically start over. So, that also kind of got the baggage out of the way. I saw Herman Loubser was in the lead and I could now come from behind. I knew I was playing well so I just had to be patient for the rest of the day,” he stated further.

The conversation with his coach and his patience seemed to have done the trick because Meyer began to pull away Loubser.

“I just stuck to my routines and I knew that mentally I was going through my routines very well,” said Meyer.

While Loubser put up a gallant fight through the last two rounds, as evidenced by his final nine-under-par 207 finish for second, the four shots’ lead that Meyer had established, proved difficult to cut down.

Ebotse golfer Dean O’Riley could not capitalise on his home-course advantage.

He was in the running overnight, tied second on Thursday after the second round, but he let it slip on Friday to tie fourth overall.
