Benoni runs low on gas in Sasolburg

It was not the start to the 2017 campaign that the newly-merged Benoni Northerns Rugby Club (former Benoni Rugby Club) senior teams would have hoped for.

The club’s first and second teams travelled to Sasolburg to kick-off their new Valke Merlin League season on Saturday, May 13.

According to club chairman Lourens Smit it was not the best day on the field with poor scrumming leading to their downfall.

The second side were on the wrong end of a 31-14 scoreboard (Benoni’s points came from try-scorers Yanga Gift Lokwa and Robert Patterson and two conversions from Michael Reichert and Dehan Prinsloo) while the first side couldn’t add a single point as they were defeated 33-0 by their Sasolburg opponents.

They will be hoping to put in an improved performance when they take on Nigel on Saturday, May 20, at the Bosman Stadium, in Brakpan.

The second team will play on the Bosman B-field at 12.30pm while the first XV will play under lights on the A-field at 7pm.

These matches form part of a host of games that will be played in Brakpan on Saturday in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Valke Rugby Union (former Eastern Transvaal Rugby Union), which was initially founded by the clubs of Benoni, Brakpan, Springs and Nigel, in 1947.

Reunions are also set to take place for all players who have represented the Valke/Eastern Transvaal over the decades, former and current Benoni, Brakpan, Springs and Nigel players and referees.

Springbok players who played for the union will also be in attendance.

An exciting SuperSport Rugby Challenge clash between the Valke and the Pumas will also be played at the Bosman Stadium, at 3pm.

Fixtures for the day are:

11.15am: u-17 development match between Polong and Kwa-Thema, Noon: Brakpan u-21 vs Springs u-21, 3pm: Valke vs Pumas (Supersport Rugby Challenge), 5pm: Brakpan first XV vs Springs first XV (Peregrine League), 7pm: Benoni first XV vs Nigel first XV (Merlin League).

Benoni Northerns Rugby Club is scheduled to play their first home game at Northerns against Kempton Park on Saturday, May 27 (kick-off times to be announced).
