Smith continues to prove his power

There have been some exciting changes for Rynfield’s motocross talent Slade Smith (16) in 2017.

Starting out with a new private sponsor (Abe Midas) for the 2017 motocross season, thanks to Andre Potgieter, Slade is looking slick on his 125cc in what is known as the Kamikaze 125 High School class.

Round one of the South African National Championships took place in Port Elizabeth in February. Smith had some unfortunate bike problems in heat one and held on to fourth position, but came back to win heat two convincingly by 17 seconds.

The teenager then took part in the Daytona Supercross Series in Florida, USA in early March, notching up a Top 10 result in his 125 class, a superb result against so many competitors in the class.

He then moved on to the prestigious Freestone National in Texas, in the USA, where he managed his best overseas result yet on a 125cc, that being a fifth place overall on his 125cc machine in the Schoolboy One Class against the toughest competition in the USA.

The Benoni High School learner rode smart in his heat races, qualifying straight through to the final heats, and riding the best he ever has, to achieve this outstanding result in the final.

Slade returned to take part in round two of the South African National Championships in Cape Town on Saturday, April 8.

Some bad luck and a fall while passing for the lead in heat one, as well as a fall while leading heat two, saw him finish third overall for the day.

He is now lying in a very close third overall in the National Championship and hopes to put himself on top of the leaderboard after the next round to be held in Bloemfontein on Saturday, May 6 at the Tempe Circuit.
