Smith placed second in the first national event in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, February 18.
The tough sandy track of the Rover Motorcycle Club was in absolute mint condition and, despite Smith having a bike niggle while leading the first heat, managed to nurse the bike home for fourth in heat one.
He then demolished the opposition in the second heat to win it by 19 seconds and claim overall second place for the event.
The young rider will next head to Cape Town for the second round of the national championship on Saturday, April 8 where he is hoping to stamp his mark on the championship.
Smith experienced a tough 2016 chasing the South African National Motocross Championship in the 125cc High School class.
After breaking his arm in the USA in March, where he took part in the Daytona Supercross Series, he came back to South Africa to race the next leg of the national series while carrying the arm injury, a tough ask.
He managed to salvage some points, but ended up chasing the whole year through due to this injury setback, and managed a credible second place overall in the national championship.
The rider then went back to the USA in November to compete in the Mini O’s Supercross and Motocross event held every year in Florida, which was his fourth consecutive year of competing at the event.
