Close but no cigar for Spurs

It was a hard fought affair that went right down to the wire when Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s Premier XI journeyed to the Lindeque Oval, in Alberton, on Sunday, February 12.

The visitors won the toss and decided to field in what would turn out to be batting friendly conditions.

Alberton got off to a flying start with an opening partnership of 100 runs from Darryl Carmody (41 runs) and JC Maritz (60 runs).

The Actonville bowling attack then brought the run-rate back down, courtesy of some good bowling from their young guns.

Alberton ended their batting innings on 223/8.

Actonville’s Ridwaan Daya (3/37) and Mark Pearse (1/36) were the stand-out performers with the ball.

When the team came into bat after lunch they lost a few quick wickets.

A good partnership then formed between Daya (94 runs) and Justin Brink (27) who helped steady the innings.

When Brink was dismissed, the Actonville tail-enders held their own with Daya.

Their hard work got the team to a stage where they needed two runs from three deliveries before a bad decision saw the team agonisingly lose the game by one run.

• On the junior front, the club’s u-8 side beat Tembisa on Saturday while their u-10 A were victors over Boksburg.

Their u-14 A side continued their undefeated record for the season when they beat Tsakane.

The Actonville u-10 team lost to Alberton.

On Saturday, February 18, the club will hold an u-12 eight-a-side festival at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Spectators are welcome to come and support the youngsters.
