Thousands expected at the 2017 Johnson Crane Marathon

The 35th running of the Johnson Crane Marathon takes place from Sahara Park Willowmoore on the morning of Sunday, January 29.

Organisers of the race, Benoni Harriers Athletics Club, are expecting to surpass their 2016 field of 12 000 runners as a result of an increase in entries this year.

Following the move from the race’s previous home at Old Benonians Sports Club, last year, the organisers are expecting the second running of the new routes to go smoothly.

Race organiser Ashvin Jivan said that planning of the 2017 Johnson Crane race has been “a challenge for us”.

“Due to the change in venue and the fact that our partnership with Eastern Cricket Union has grown,” he said.

“Our transition to the new venue has been beneficial and we are ready for the biggest field ever in the history of the race.

“Road running and walking is on the increase and this is why we are expecting big numbers.

“I would like to make an urgent plea to all the motorists and residents of the Greater Benoni area to exercise patience and embrace the race.”

On Sunday, between 6am and noon, the N12 on and off ramps at Snake Road will be closed.

Motorists are requested to use alternative routes.

Late entries are available from Sahara Park Willowmoore for the 21km, 10km and 5km distances only.

Entries will be taken from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, January 28 or on Sunday morning from 4am onwards.

Jivan thanked the race’s main sponsor Johnson Crane and print sponsor Shereno Printers for their continued support.
