T20 tourney gets going

The Eastern Cricket Union’s new club T20 competition got underway this weekend with the first two pool matches played on Sunday, January 22.

As fate would have it, Benoni’s two representatives in the tournament, the Premier teams of Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) and Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC), were drawn in the same pool, Pool B.

They were drawn along with Duduza Cricket Club and United Cricket Club’s Promotion XI, with all pool matches played at Northern Areas.

A T20 Benoni cricket derby got things off to a start on the Northerns A-field.

Actonville were put into bat and put together a decent score of 108/9 in their 20 overs.

Michael Enslin fired a quick 40 runs with the bat up front followed by Justin Brink in the middle orders with a good 27 runs.

WP Myburgh (3/10), Stiaan Jordaan (3/11) and Joshua Thomas (2/20) were the best BNCC bowlers.

Rhenier Jordaan (26 runs), skipper Kurt Francis (27 runs not out) and Mark Robey (20 runs) helped BNCC chase down the target in the 19th over.

Ridwaan Daya (3/17) and Xolile Nkomo (2/24) were the best of the Actonville bowlers as Northerns won the T20 derby by three wickets.

BNCC followed up that win with a 65-run victory over United on the A-field (Rhenier Jordaan top-scoring with 45 runs) while Actonville succumbed to Duduza on the B-field.

They still have hopes of qualifying for this Sunday’s quarter finals (January 29) with results in the other games leaving all to play for in Saturday afternoon’s final pool game (January 28).

BNCC will play Duduza while ASCC take on United at 1.30pm on Saturday.

The quarter finals and semi-finals will take place on Sunday, with venues to be announced.

The final will be played at a later date.
