AB expected to make return in amateur match at Willowmoore

Amateur cricket matches in South Africa are not renowned for drawing big crowds, and grounds are mostly empty when these provincial, semi-professional matches are played, as cricketers strive to showcase their stuff and force their way into franchise teams.

Things could be different, however, when Sahara Park Willowmoore hosts the cross pool CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge match between Easterns and Northerns on Sunday, January 22.

This is because Protea batting superstar and fan favourite AB de Villiers is expected to make a low-key return to action in the amateur match in Benoni.

De Villiers has been out of action since August last year with an elbow injury, but Proteas team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee confirmed that he has resumed training.

It is believed that if de Villiers comes through Sunday’s match unscathed‚ he will be included in the Proteas team to take on Sri Lanka in the third and final T20 match at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on January 25.

Another Protea, Morne Morkel, could also feature in the match pending an assessment on his back injury.

The 50-over match is scheduled to start at 9.30am.
