Titans, Lions draw in Benoni

A drawn result in the Sunfoil Series match between the Multiply Titans and the bizhub Highveld Lions, played at Sahara Willowmoore Park, from Thursday, January 12 to Sunday, January 15, meant that the hosts dropped from first to second position on the log.

The Titans are now behind the Hollywoodbets Dolphins on the table, who have a 1.12-point lead.

With three matches remaining in the four-day domestic league, however, there is still plenty to play for, with only 10 points separating the Dolphins and the Lions (in fifth spot).

The match itself was, on Day Four, going nowhere fast and was brought to a drawn conclusion at the tea break on Sunday, with the Titans on 143/2 needing a further 262 runs for an improbable victory.

The hosts were chasing a target of 405 runs after their visitors had declared their second-innings on 308 for six.

In their first innings the Lions were all out for 347, largely due to the efforts of Nicky van den Bergh (99 runs), Devon Conway (66 runs) and number 10 Nono Pongolo, who struck an important 49 not out.

The Titans replied in their first innings with 251 all out to give the Lions a 96-run first-innings lead.

Coach Geoffrey Toyana’s Lions then added 308 runs in their batting innings courtesy of centuries from Dominic Hendricks (103 runs) and former Titans player and Easterns product Mangaliso Mosehle (100).

Aiden Markram struck a 50 at the top of the order for Titans in their second innings, which eventually closed at 143/2.
