Actonville start 2017 with defeat

The Eastern Cricket Union’s Premier League resumed on Sunday, January 15, with Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC) welcoming Brakpan’s United Cricket Club to Lord’s Cricket Grounds for their final match of the first half fixtures before the league splits into a Premier League A and Premier League B competition.

Actonville won the toss and decided to bowl first on a slow wicket.

United struggled to get the ball away off the host team’s bowling in the first 25 overs, but, United’s batsmen patiently held firm to put together a total of 242/5 in their 50-over batting innings.

Jacques Nel (3/43) and Wilber van Dyk (1/56) were the best of the ASCC bowlers.

Actonville started shakily in the chase of the target and lost their first four wickets with just 73 runs on the scoreboard.

A 100-run partnership was formed between Michael Enslin, who scored his first century at Premier League level (a magnificent 105 runs), and Kyle Landsberg (24 runs), but the team fell short by 38 runs as they were bowled out in the 47th over.

Aidan Justus (3/21) and Kevin Hinton (2/28) were the best bowlers for United.

The club, however, has still qualified to play in the Premier League A competition.

A club T20 tournament will commence this weekend.
