From Kids Haven to the EFC hexagon

Former Kids Haven resident Bokang Masunyane (22) made his professional Mixed Martial Arts debut in the first fight of the evening at EFC 56, at Carnival City, on December 9.

He dropped jaws with thumping take-downs, blistering grounds and pounds and somersaults, to celebrate a first round win over Musaddiq Alli Hasan, via submission, two minutes and 20 seconds into the round.

The young fighter, from the revered Fight Fit Militia camp, also represented South Africa in wrestling at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Masunyane, who had Benoni fighter and training partner JP Buys in his corner, told the City Times that the fight went his way the moment he took his opponent to the ground.

“When we hit the floor, I knew that my chance of winning was greater,” he said.

When asked what it was like to step into the ring as a fully-fledged professional fighter, he said: “It was extremely exciting, because it is something that I had been looking forward to since I was fighting at amateur level.”

Masunyane, nicknamed “Little Giant” due to his 1.57m stature, said that his goal is to gain as much experience as possible by fighting in as many bouts as he can.
