Northerns beat Bedfordview in Benoni

The last four Sundays have been good ones for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Premier XI, in the Eastern Premier League.

With four consecutive wins, the outlook is looking positive for skipper Kurt Francis and his players, as the first half of the 2016/2017 campaign nears completion.

The BNCC team added league newcomers Bedfordview to their list of recent scalps, with a bonus-point 121-run home victory at Northern Areas on Sunday, November 20 .

After losing the toss and being put in to bat by opposing captain Jason Smith, BNCC endured a tricky start to the match and found themselves stuttering at 44/4.

Regardt Verster and Mark Robey steadied the BNCC innings with a 60-run partnership, before the latter was dismissed for 25 runs from 41 deliveries.

The left-handed Verster held the fort well and his innings of 84 runs from 97 balls (seven fours), would be crucial in carrying his side over 200 runs.

All-rounder Regardt Verster put on a man-of-the-match display for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Premier XI, in Sunday’s Easterns Prermier League clash with Bedfordview.

His 73-run partnership with number eight batsman Lance Humphrey (who scored 24 runs from 51 balls), helped the team build a defendable score of 221.

Bedfordview’s Michael Hegar (3/33 in nine overs), CJ van der Walt (3/34 in 10 overs) and JP Botes (3/42 in 10 overs), did the majority of the damage with the leather for the visitors.

When Northerns took the cherry, Bedfordview’s opening batsman Duane Mountjoy went on the attack against the BNCC seam bowlers with a quick 34 runs from 26 balls (six fours and a six).

He was dismissed by Stefan Jordaan with the score at 45/1 and a Bedfordview collapse followed, when BNCC’s slow bowling options of Stiaan Jordaan (4/20 in 8.4 overs), Verster (3/11 in eight overs), Ernest Kemm (1/7 in seven overs) and Matthew “Traddle” Wright (1/8 in three overs) took charge of matters.

The guests were all out for 100 runs and continued their winless streak in the league.

Captain Francis was pleased with the showing from his team.

“It seems as though as soon as the boys put on a Northerns shirt, that’s all they play for,” he said.

“We took advantage of the slow wicket and having three quality spinners in the team, makes us tough for any side to beat.”

Northerns will be confident heading into their next fixture on Sunday, November 27: against Duduza at Willowmoore Park’s A-field.
