BNCC make light work of United

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Premier XI clinched a clinical away victory over United Cricket Club, at Hosking Park, in Brakpan, on Sunday, November 13.

Buoyed by a nerve-wracking one-run win over arch-rivals Kempton Park, at Northern Areas, the previous weekend, coach Nicolaos Moragemos’s team, despite the loss of a number of regular players, secured a comfortable 104-run win.

The Benoni outfit also obtained an all important bonus point.

After being put in to bat first on a flat wicket, BNCC’s opening pair of Rhenier Jordaan and Richard Thompson formed a good first-wicket stand of 71 runs, until the latter was dismissed for 23 runs from 47 deliveries.

Tian van der Walt joined Jordaan in the middle, and the batsmen put on an 87-run partnership before the former was caught in the third man area and dismissed for an almost run-a-ball 44 runs from 46 deliveries.

Jordaan, celebrating his 27th birthday, received some welcome gifts when he was dropped thrice in the field.

The left-handed batsman made sure he capitalised on this luck by playing neat shots throughout his knock.

His birthday fortune ran out, though, when he was dismissed just short of a deserved century, for 96 runs from 119 balls, courtesy of a superb diving catch from former BNCC player Vaughn Humphrey.

His efforts helped the BNCC team put on a total of 265.

With the ball, BNCC opening bowler Lance Humphrey (brother of United’s opening batsman Vaughn) was in rampant mood.

The paceman picked up figures of 3/34 on the day, but could not claim his brother’s wicket, despite an intense battle between them.

Vaughn would go on to score 45 runs before his wicket was claimed by talented 15-year-old spinner WP Myburgh, who enjoyed his best performance to date for the Premier XI.

Myburgh claimed figures of 4/40 in nine overs and could have made it a five-wicket haul, but put down a difficult catch off his own bowling in his final spell.

Mark Robey (2/3 in 3.1 overs) wrapped up the United tail-enders to secure a third-straight league win for BNCC.

“We were clinical in all aspects of the game,” said Northerns skipper Kurt Francis.

“The batsmen were brilliant up front and the bowlers stuck to their guns.

“The energy in the field was great to see and the vibe in the team is at a new high.

“We need to carry this momentum forward for the remainder of the first half of the season.”

They will be striving to do just that when they return home for a clash with struggling league new boys, Bedfordview, on Sunday, November 20.

The first ball is scheduled to be delivered at 10am.

  • In other results, Twayne Stewart’s Promotion League XI also met United on Sunday.

The match between the two clubs, at Northern Areas, went the way of the visitors, who won by two wickets.

Suleiman Ebrahim’s Saturday First League team enjoyed a crushing 10-wicket win away to Bedfordview the day before.

Seamers Andrew Smith (5/19 in 5.5 overs) and Joshua Thomas (4/25 in seven overs) stood out as they rolled their opponents for 49 runs in 14.5 overs.

  • Meanwhile, “rain points” were shared in the Premier League clash between Actonville Spurs and Kempton Park cricket clubs on Sunday.

A wet patch on the Lords A wicket prevented play from taking place.
