Mother Nature forces another called off match

Mother Nature appears to be in conflict with the cricket gods that watch over Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Premier XI.

A wet and unplayable wicket again greeted the BNCC players and their opponents from CBC Old Boys on the morning of Sunday, October 23 ,following the heavy storm the night before, with strong winds again blowing the covers off the deck.

The umpires called off the match and the teams shared “rain points.”

This follows last week’s abandonment of the Benoni cricket derby between BNCC and Actonville Spurs Cricket Club, at the same ground.

“We took all the necessary steps to keep our covers down, but nature won,” said BNCC skipper Kurt Francis.

“It definitely puts us under pressure to get some big wins going forward, but we will continue to train hard and be ready for the next game that goes ahead.”

The team will be hoping that the weather plays along when they host Springs Old Boys on Sunday, October 30.

The club’s Promotion XI’s match versus United Cricket Club, in Brakpan, and the Director’s XI, on Northerns’ B-field, were also rained off.

• Meanwhile, one BNCC match that was played over the weekend was the Saturday First League encounter, between skipper Suleiman Ebrahim’s side and United, at Hosking Park, on October 22.

Batting first, BNCC scored 183/9 in their 35-over innings (Andrew Mc Farlane top-scoring with 44 not out).

With the ball, the team managed to wrap up their Brakpan-based opponents in the 34th over, for 175 runs, to secure an eight-run victory.

Mc Farlane was having a good day and bagged 4/33 in 6.3 overs, while Ebrahim also starred with bowling figures of 3/26 runs in five overs.
