Actonville bag another away win

After the Benoni cricket Derby with Benoni Northerns Cricket Club was abandoned last weekend due to a wet wicket, Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI picked up a second away victory of the season at Boksburg’s PG Park on Sunday October 23.

The latter result followed Actonville’s defeat of Bedfordview by 23 runs, via an exciting bowling display, in that fixture a fortnight prior.

Actonville’s skipper, Kyle Degambur, decided to bowl first on a wicket made tricky by overnight rain, when he won the toss on Sunday.

His bowlers started well by picking up early wickets and Actonville kept up the pressure during the Boksburg innings, to have their hosts all out for 131.

Wilber van Dyk (3/12) and Hussein Shakeel Ahmed (3/22) were the star performers with the ball.

Actonville went in to bat before lunch with a positive approach, to reach 48/2 by the interval.

After lunch Degambur (43) and Vyashan Govenden (39) enjoyed a 50-run partnership to put Actonville on track for victory.

They achieved that with relative comfort to claim a six wicket bonus-point win.

• Meanwhile, Actonville’s Promotion League side traveled to new territory in Easterns cricket: Midrand Cricket Club in Olifantsfontein.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field. Actonville’s batsmen were careful in their innings and, with the game reduced to 35 overs per innings, ended on 158/6. Ahmed Mohammed top-scored with 60.

When Actonville’s bowlers took the leather ball, they gave no chance to Midrand to get away with the run-rate and bowled them out for 95. New signing Mohammed Salojee bagged figures of 3/19 and Farhaad Umarjee took 3/17, to ensure a 63-run victory.

“With very young players in our Premier and Promotion teams, we look on track to achieve what we have set out to do in terms of our head coach, Thomas Phekane’s, three-year plan,” said Actonville Spurs’ public relations officer Zunaid Seedat.

“These are the calibre of victories that our club can be proud of.”
