Second for Smith after challenging year

After a gruelling up-and-down injury-plagued year, Slade Smith (15) managed to finish second in the Motorsport South Africa (MSA) South African National Motocross Championship, on his ABE Midas 125cc Husqvarna.

This year, Smith, a St Dunstan’s College pupil, moved out of the Pro Mini Class, which he won last year in the SA National Championship, and entered the hotly-contested 125cc Class one year early, known as the “Kamikaze Class” one year early.

He showed true grit and determination after breaking his arm racing at the Daytona Supercross, in the USA, in March.

He had to try to chase back the lost points, and then, unfortunately, went on to injure his back and then his thumb on different occasions.

The talented rider, however, fought his way back to contention.

It came close, but it was not to be, and Smith had to settle for second position in the championship in his rookie year.

He will contest the same class next year.

Smith leaves for the USA in early November, to again contest the prestigious Mini Os in Gainesville, Florida.

He will try to better the third position he gained there last year, against some of the best riders in the world.
