Wet wicket forces abandonment of cricket derby

As fate would have it weather again had an effect on a Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) Premier XI home match.

Play was abandoned due to a wet wicket on Sunday, October 16 after just seven deliveries were bowled in the Benoni cricket derby Eastern Premier League fixture between BNCC and Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC).

Strong winds overnight blew the covers off the square and rain water seeped onto the deck.

The pitch was deemed unplayable and dangerous by the standing umpires and the match was called off with both teams sharing “rain points”.

This comes after BNCC’s match versus Alberton, a week prior, was shortened due to a wet wicket.

Northerns will be hoping that there will be no similar issues when they host rivals CBC Old Boys at Northern Areas on Sunday, October 23.

• Meanwhile, across the road, play was possible in the Promotion League match between BNCC and newcomers Midrand.

Captain Twayne Stewart’s Northerns side made it two wins from two league fixtures with a seven-wicket win.

Batting first, Midrand achieved a score of 195 in their 50 overs.

Alex Rudolph (3/30 in six overs), Shawn Wessels (2/25 in 10 overs) and Stewart (2/46 in 10 overs) did well with the ball.

With the bat Divan Prinsloo (62 not out from 70 deliveries) and Rudolph (40 not out from 66 balls) carried BNCC over the line in the 41st over.

Zane Dunn’s 42 runs from 63 deliveries must also be noted.

They will travel to Brakpan on Sunday for a clash against United Cricket Club.
