When soccer is your true passion

Etwatwa resident and women’s football player, Amanda Citywayo, is striving to achieve her sporting dream. She is waiting to hear if she will become an official member of the national women’s football team, Banyana Banyana.

It’s a decade since her passion for football began at the tender age of eight, after her uncle encouraged her to play the sport regardless of her gender.

“I see myself playing overseas,” Citywayo, who draws inspiration from Amanda Dlamini and Lionel Messi, told the City Times.

“There are a lot of girls in the country who are incredibly talented and the competition for places is tough,” she said.

“You need to stand out from the rest in order to be chosen.”

The striker said that the secret weapon which got her to the next level in the sport, was playing her soccer with the boys.

“Playing with the boys makes you mentally and physically stronger,” she explained.

Citywayo has previously featured in the u-17 women’s national team, when she traveled with the squad to Zambia in 2013.

The 18-year-old matric pupil at Petit High School also hopes to study business management at the University of Johannesburg next year.

As the first person to go to university in her family if that happens, Citywayo is focused on making something of herself.

Inspired by businessman Patrice Motsepe and local businesswoman in her community, Citywayo sees herself one day owning a retail and merchandising company.
