Crutch Tournament has grown

The annual "Crutch Hockey Tournament" was played at the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association’s (EGHA) AstroTurf on Sunday, September 25 and was hosted by the Benoni Northerns Kittens.

“There were a few new teams this year so the tournament has grown, namely the two Old Dunstonians sides, the Benoni Northerns Colts and the Benoni Northerns second side which plays in the Southern Gauteng league,” said Ashley George, vice chairman of Benoni Northerns Hockey.

“The Kittens must be commended for delivering an excellent tournament from a catering and organisational viewpoint.

“Thanks must also go out to our unsung heroes, our club staff.

“There is no winner at this tournament, but the standard of hockey has definitely improved.

“Modderfontein ran a raffle and wheelchairs were donated to a charity organisation.”

The infamous “Crutch”, which has the names listed of all the hosts for the past 30 years, was handed over to the Benoni Northerns Hangovers who will organise next year’s event.
