Old Bens ‘are not going to be taken lightly anymore’

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI secured their 2016 ELFA Super League season objective of finishing in the top third of the league table.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s team wrapped up the campaign for the year with a 2-1 victory over relegation-bound Edenvale away from home on Saturday, September 17.

This followed their mammoth 13-0 win over Corinthians at Currin Park the weekend prior.

With relegation looking likely Edenvale threw everything at Cloete’s men and were leading 1-0 with about 20 minutes to go in the match before Lesiba Modau and Nicholas Simelane found the back of the net to earn all three points.

Modau’s goal meant that it was his 28th league strike of the campaign – a truly magnificent return in 30 Super League matches.

Bens finished in fifth position.

“It’s all done and dusted for us this season,” said Cloete.

Whatever happens from here it has been a great season for us to finish in the top third of the league considering that we finished in ninth position in 2015.”

Before 2015 the side played in and earned promotion in 2014 from the now defunct ELFA Super League Division Two after a controversial suspension and then reinstatement into a lower division in 2013 by ELFA.

Poor turn-out at training usually plays a massive role in the success or failure of an amateur football club, but Bens had a good average of 15/16 first-team players per training session and about 85 per cent attendance at training by all senior players, a big contributor to their strong season.

With regards to next year’s campaign Cloete is hoping to finish even higher and possibly put up a challenge for the title.

“One thing is for sure, we are not going to be taken lightly by anyone anymore.”

The coach also praised the club’s Super League Reserve side for finishing in fourth place in their league.
