Old Bens put 13 past hapless Corinthians

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI had something of a Saturday stroll in the park when they hosted Corinthians in their penultimate ELFA Super League match of the season at Currin Park on September 10.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s men managed an incredible 13-0 score-line against a Corinthians side filled with young players.

“We did not know what to expect because two weeks ago Highlands Park beat them 1-0 in a close encounter,” said Cloete.

“We prepared the same as we would for any other game.

“Ten minutes into the game I could see that we were going to be the stronger side on the day.”

At half-time Bens had scored seven goals.

Cloete made three substitutions at the break and the goal-fest continued with Bens adding six more goals.

“At the end of the game the Old Bens players went over to the young Corinthians team and encouraged them to keep on trying as they did the whole game,” said the coach.

“They were just too inexperienced.

“We can only play against what is put in front of us and we did that well.

“This result keeps us in the hunt for a Top Six finish.”

The club’s reserve side were awarded three points after their Corinthians opponents failed to pitch up for the game.

They are now lying in fourth position in their league.

• Meanwhile, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI had their scheduled match against Randburg postponed (at a date still to be announced) due to a clash in times with an Easterns u-17 match.
