Junior inter-provincial hosted at Gauteng East

The Gauteng East Tennis Association (GETA) co-hosted a junior tennis inter-provincial tournament at the Gauteng East Tennis Centre on Saturday, July 30.

Teams from Gauteng North, Limpopo, North West and Gauteng East participated in the u-12 and u-14 age groups at the Lakefield courts while the u-10, u-16 and u-18 age groups were hosted by Gauteng North.

“It is the first inter-provincial where we have entered more than one team in the past two years,” said Ken Smith, president of GETA.

“We hope to have many more of these inter-provincials which will be extremely good for our youngsters as well as for Gauteng East Tennis in general.”

He added that the state of tennis in the Gauteng East region is “fair” and that in order for the sport to grow it needs to be played at a lot more schools.

“The lack of tennis in schools is definitely a weak point as it is usually put on the back-burner behind sports like rugby and cricket.”

Results for Gauteng East in the respective age groups are:

• u-10: First place.

• u-12: Fourth place.

• u-14: Second place.

• u-16: Second place.

• u-18: First place.
