Double delight for Old Bens over Randburg

After a long spell without a victory, coach Raymond Cloete’s Old Bens Football Club first XI are back to winning ways in the ELFA Super League.

A 1-0 win on their travels to league powerhouses and last season’s champions, Randburg, on Saturday, July 30, marked a Super League double over their revered opponents in the 2016 campaign.

A Lesiba Modau free kick separated the sides in a 2-1 victory at Currin Park, when the teams first met in April.

It would be the same player whose goal would make the telling difference for his team on Saturday.

With four regular first teamers missing from the action it was not going to be easy.

Cloete said: “We arrived in Randburg expecting the worst and came back with the best.”

He told the City Times that their hosts enjoyed the upper hand and experienced the bulk of the possession in the first half, and could easily have taken the lead, had it not been for the upright.

With about 20 minutes remaining in the second period, Cloete’s hand was forced when striker Percy Visagie sustained an injury and was replaced by James Brough, who made the step up from the Reserve XI.

Brough’s impact was soon felt as he played in an excellent ball for Modau who would net the goal that would eventually decide the result.

“We have had a couple of bad drawn results lately, so this is a big morale booster for the boys,” said the coach.

“The three points keeps us in the mix in the top half of the table and is a big lift going into the remaining fixtures.

“We are really happy and hopefully it sets the tone for more victories in the final weeks.”

Cloete’s team welcomes Robertsham to Benoni on Saturday, August 6, and will be aiming for another victory.

Kick-off is at 3.30pm.
