Township rugby is going from strength to strength

Evolving from a small agreement made between St Dunstan’s College and Daveyton’s Unity Secondary School, and a simple passion to get involved with their community, township rugby in Ekurhuleni, overall, is on the rise like no other time.

Secondary schools in the townships of Daveyton, Etwatwa, Tembisa, Tsakane, Sebokeng and Katlehong will play and are already playing Vuka League rugby matches in their respective district clusters, through a venture between the Valke Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA).

Six district teams (Ekurhuleni North, Gauteng East, Sedibeng West and Ekurhuleni South) will be selected from those schools to battle it out for the Legends Cup in August and September at St Dunstan’s College.

The best players from the Legends Cup will be selected for a provincial developmental side, to participate in the Iqhawe Week development rugby tournament, in Cape Town.

On Tuesday, July 19, at the Valke Rugby Union’s headquarters, at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park, 19 rugby kits were handed over to representatives from the various schools, while another 19 jerseys will be handed over soon.

“We never thought that it was going to boom like this,” said Jaco Coetzer, who heads up SARLA’s Vuka Rugby in the Valke region.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people who have never played rugby before to get an opportunity to start passing the oval ball around.

“I have been in all the townships and it is lovely to see what is happening there.

“We have a lot of coaches involved and we do a lot of coaches’ training.

“It’s great to see that people have changed their attitudes about rugby in the townships.”

Former Springbok Stefan Terblanche, who was on hand to hand out the kit, expressed his and SARLA’s full support for the Vuka League and Legends Cup in the Valke region.
