Anthony Gordinho signs three-year deal at SuperSport United

Benonian Anthony Gordinho (21), younger brother of Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo, is striving to make the same impact as his sibling in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), after signing a new three-year-deal with SuperSport United on Friday, July 22.

SuperSport United has strong ties with Benoni.

Striker Bradley Grobler is in their ranks, while goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez also had a stint with the club.

Speaking to the City Times regarding his new contract, the former Benoni High School pupil said he is excited and eager to make his mark and force his way into coach Stuart Baxter’s plans during the new 2016/2017 PSL campaign.

“It means the world to me, as it is a big step forward in my career,” said the attacking midfielder.

“SuperSport requires your best performance and good discipline on and off the field.”

The younger Gordinho started playing the game at Benoni Northerns, before moving to the Orlando Pirates development side.

He had stints with Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town’s development sides before finding himself in SuperSport’s reserve team, turning out for the club on a number of occasions in the Multichoice Diski Challenge.

The young player, in 2014, also had trials at English club Leceister City.

Gordinho now wants to make his mark with “Matsatsantsa” at the top level of South African football.

“I would like to contribute by helping the team to win silverware this season, and also work hard to make as many appearances as I can,” he said.

Asked which players in the setup he admires most he added: “I look up to Dean Furman and Reeyad Pieterse.

“They are always the first to push me and motivate me to be better than I am, and to pick me up when I am down.

“I am looking forward to playing with everyone in the team, as each player has different qualities that I respect.”

With regards to working with Baxter, who coached his brother at Chiefs, the Benonian said: “He is a great coach who knows how to get the best out of us.”

Asked if fellow Benonian Grobler has offered him any advice since his arrival at the Pretoria club, Gordinho replied: “Yes, most of the time he advises me to wear my seat belt when I drive, but, on a serious note, he has helped me deal with problems that affect me mentally as a player.”

The player, who harbours dreams of turning out for German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund one day, understands that there is a lot for him to do still, if he is to achieve his football goals.

He expressed his gratitude to the friends and family who have stood by him and believed in him from the start.
