Lorenzo is only looking forward

It is quite peculiar how Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho (22) missed out on a spot in Owen da Gama’s South African u-23 national football team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The charismatic player has, however, firmly focused his attention on having a good season with the “Amakhosi”, after a solid showing in coach Steve Komphela’s defensive backline, in the 2015/2016 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign.

“Preseason has been going well and I feel good, confident and excited going into the season,” he told the City Times.

Chiefs will lock horns with old Sowetan foes Orlando Pirates in the traditional season-opening friendly spectacle, the Carling Black Label Cup, on Saturday, July 30, at the FNB Stadium.

Gordinho is looking forward to the match and said he is expecting a tough, yet exciting derby clash.

The former Benoni High School pupil has his mind set on reaffirming his place as a regular starter in Komphela’s side.

“I want to continue to perform well for the team, in order to help us achieve and win silverware,” he said.

Reflecting on the previous campaign with Chiefs, Gordinho said that he learned that every game must be treated like a cup final.

“Small margins can decide a game, so this season we need to learn from previous mistakes and not repeat them,” he explained.

“The goal for the club is the same as always – we continually strive to win titles.”

With regard to his goals for the 2016/2017 season, the defender is determined to mature more in his role and to grow and improve as a player.
