Defeat is a big setback for Old Bens

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI have not picked up a win in weeks, and that status quo continued at Currin Park on Saturday, July 23, against Olympia, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the ELFA Super League.

Poor defending was to blame for two first-half goals from their opponents within the first 25 minutes.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s side could simply not get into the match and paid the price for having three regular starters missing from the line-up.

The coach introduced three changes within the first 10 minutes after the break and Bens found their feet and played what Cloete dubbed “desirable football”.

Bens would finally get their goal, but that was all that could be mustered up as they slumped to defeat.

“This was one game that we should have won and it is a setback for us,” said Cloete.

“We were just not in the game in the first half and it cost us.

“Things don’t get any easier for us, as we play against league leaders Randburg away, on Saturday.

“But, we will go out and attack with nothing to lose.

“We beat them in the first round and hope to do the same this time round,” he added.
