Old Bens pick up an away point

A late, deflected second-half own goal from a set piece forced a 1-1 for Old Bens Football Club’s first XI away to Union Football Club in their ELFA Super League clash on Saturday, July 16.

An early strike from forward Lesiba Modau meant that coach Raymond Cloete’s men enjoyed the one-goal advantage for the majority of the match before the last gasp own goal ensured that the Old Bens outfit returned to Currin Park with just a point.

Despite the drawn result Cloete told the City Times that he was pleased with the team’s play on Saturday.

“Again, it was that same old story of not converting good chances when they presented themselves,” he said.

The coach added that although losing the lead in that fashion was a downer for the players there is still a good spirit in the squad and they are still working extremely hard to achieve their goal of at least a Top Five finish.

They will be striving for a return to winning ways when they host Olympia in Benoni on Saturday, July 23.

The match will kick-off at 3.30pm.
