Another week, another drawn result

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI are starting to make a habit of drawn results.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s men have picked up four points in as many matches, after another 2-2 result in the ELFA Super League, this time against Union, at Northern Areas, on Saturday, July 9.

Captain Wade Marshall converted twice from the penalty spot for the host team’s two goals.

The coach, however, is not unhappy with the way things have unfolded recently and he remains firm in his belief that his long-term goal of rebuilding the first side into united and seasoned campaigners is still well on track.

With regards to the performance on Saturday, van den Berg said: “They surprised us with a completely different team to that which we first faced at the beginning of the season.

“Again, we were quite depleted and I was forced to play some of my younger players in different positions.”

He praised those footballers who played out of their favoured positions, particularly Dean Steyn, who took up a central defensive role alongside his skipper.

“Dean did extremely well against a tricky Union forward.

“I am proud of the young players who did the job for me,” van den Berg commented.

Asked if the drawn results are a concern, the coach said: “Obviously we always want to win, but we aren’t playing bad football either and the guys are starting to bond well.”

The Northerns men will be hoping to end the string of draws with a home win over league bottom dwellers Boksburg, on Saturday, July 16.

The match will kick-off at 3.30pm.

• Meanwhile, the club’s reserve side also drew on Saturday.

Darren Lee’s side were left ruing a missed Andrew Perry penalty, which struck the post.

The match ended on 1-1.
