Northerns fight back to draw

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI fought back from 2-0 down, to draw a tricky away ELFA Super League encounter 2-2, in Katlehong, against Zwide, on Saturday, June 2.

The result means that coach Jannie van den Berg’s men have picked up three draws in as many matches.

Van den Berg believes that his side can still achieve a Top Three position come season’s end, but realises that they will need to secure more winning results, particularly at home.

They have not won a match since the Benoni Derby against rivals Old Bens in May.

He believes that the players showed good character to fight back after going down 2-0 at half time.

His prayers to find an out-and-out striker have been temporarily answered by the return (for a month) of last season’s top-scorer and BNFC’s 2015 Sportsman of the Year, Brogan Shrimpton, who has been plying his trade with Ole Soccer Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The striker will leave for the States again, on Wednesday, August 3, to start pre-season training for Davenport University, where he will also be studying.

His impact was immediately felt when he came off the bench for 15 minutes to score and add to midfielder Tshatsho “China” Molapo’s goal.

After equalising the game, the team pressed on and struggled to break the deadlock.

Kegan Frawley and Dean Steyn both struck the upright, while Shrimpton also missed a good opportunity up front that could have ensured the win.

Van den Berg praised his goalkeeper, Rowen Viljoen, for making a telling save against the run of play, a goal which could have given the hosts all three points.

The Benoni outfit will host Union FC, at Northern Areas, on Saturday, July 9, with kick-off at 3.30pm.

• Meanwhile, the second team were 3-1 victors in Katlehong.

They will open proceedings against Union at 1.15pm,this Saturday.
