Depleted side squanders lead, draws match

It was pretty much the same story as the week prior for coach Jannie van den Berg and his Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) first XI.

A lack of an out-and-out striker has the coach scratching his head and pondering how to go about finding a true goal-scorer.

His team enjoyed a 2-0 advantage (goals from Kwanda Sokutu and Stoney Moketsi) over Alberton at Northern Areas in the ELFA Super League on Saturday, June 25, before costly errors ensured that their opponents would bounce back to force a 2-2 draw – with their goals coming from a free-kick and a spot kick.

The side was also a depleted one, “a makeshift side” as the coach referred to it, with regular starters like skipper Wade Marshall, Warrren Vogel and goalkeeper Colte Smit missing from proceedings.

Van den Berg wasn’t happy with letting the lead slip, but added that he cannot complain too much about the drawn result.

The team will travel to Katlehong on Saturday, July 2, to play Zwide.
