Sixteen goals in three matches from Cloete’s team

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI are moving like a freight train in the ELFA Super League at the moment.

Since their 1-0 defeat in the Benoni Derby, three weekends back, the side has been on a rampage in front of goal.

In their last three league clashes since then, coach Raymond Cloete’s players have scored 16 goals and are knocking on the door in the upper echelons of the table.

Edenvale Football Club visited Currin Park on Saturday, June 11, and were sent home on the wrong end of a 6-0 hammering.

Cloete’s men started off slowly in the opening stages, until Lesiba Modau added another goal of the highest quality to his season tally.

It was a strike that left those in attendance absolutely gobsmacked.

“It must be one of the greatest goals ever scored at Old Bens,” said Cloete.

“The ball came in from the right side of the field and Lesiba chested it over the defender, just outside the box, and volleyed it into the top corner of the net.”

Buoyed by that effort, Old Bens dominated the play from that moment on.

Two great strikes from Percy Visagie (who bagged a hat trick last week) put Old Bens 3-0 up and, just before half time, Lasego “Wii Man” Mlangeni slotted home the team’s fourth goal.

In the second half, Ludick Malele volleyed past the Edenvale ‘keeper to make it 5-0, while Mlangeni secured his brace, which would see Old Bens enjoying a good afternoon out with a final score of 6-0.

“With half the season now completed we have to keep training hard and maintaining high levels of concentration for the remaining 15 games,” said the coach.

“With good sides looking to win the league it’s going to be a very good second round.”

Cloete added that players’ work commitments and attending weddings and funerals make it difficult to keep the consistency that they are looking for, but they will work hard to try to maintain a good standard of football.

Old Bens will host Germiston at Currin Park this Saturday, June 18, at 3.30pm.

• Meanwhile, the club’s reserve side enjoyed another win (3-2) which keeps them in the top five in the Reserve League.

• Local rivals Benoni Northerns were dealt a 6-0 ELFA Super League thrashing away to Robertsham on Saturday.

They will look to bounce back from recent defeats on Saturday, June 18 when they host Sporting at Northerns at 3.30pm.
