Lifting the bar in Brentwood Park

The first South African Masters Weightlifting Championship in 20 years was held at CrossFit Jozi East, in Brentwood Park, recently.

The event was hosted by the South African Masters Weightlifting Federation and provided a platform for any male or female athlete over the age of 35 to participate in the sport of weightlifting.

Athletes competed in various weight divisions on the day.

The goal in the sport of weightlifting is to lift the most weight possible from ground to overhead. There are two movements and each is scored separately.

The first movement is called the snatch and, the second, the clean and jerk.

An athlete has three attempts to lift the most weight possible in a single lift for both the snatch and then the clean and jerk.

The final weights/scores are added together to give a final total weight/score.

This particular event also provided the opportunity for athletes to qualify for the Masters World Championships to be held later this year.
