New school league aims to address grassroots rugby development

Transformation has once again been the word on the lips of everybody involved in South African sport this past week.

Although sports minister Fikile Mbalula is making waves at the top levels of national sporting federations, true grassroots rugby development is taking off in the townships of Ekurhuleni.

Spawning from the great success of the Rural Rugby Development Programme (which grew from the Daveyton Rugby Development Programme, through a partnership between St Dunstan’s College and the Daveyton Soccer Academy at Sinaba Stadium) young, secondary school-going rugby players will now be granted the opportunity to play competitive high school league rugby.

This will take place through an exciting new venture between the Valke Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Legends Association, known as the Vuka League and Legends Cup.

The township school rugby league and cup tournaments will be officially launched at the Sinaba Stadium, on Saturday, May 7, at 8am.

An introductory meeting and explanation of how the league structures will work will take place, followed by an exhibition match between St Dunstan’s College and a Daveyton Invitational XI.

Following the launch, the City Times will provide an in-depth explanation of how the league will be structured.
