Top bowlers hosted on Country Club’s greens

The prestigious Perfect Delivery Bowls South Africa Open Inter-District Championships came to the lawns of the Benoni Country Club (BCC) from Monday, April 4 to Friday, April 8.

The club was one of four in the Ekurhuleni district (including Edenvale, Modderfontein and Avion Park) which hosted competitors (men and women bowlers) from 20 South African bowling districts.

Bowls South Africa divided the men’s and women’s tournaments into two sections, on a league basis with all teams in the same section playing each other.

Each game was played over 21 ends, split into three sets of seven ends each.

The silver and gold medal play-off finals took place at Edenvale Bowling Club, on Friday.

Gary Brown, chairman of BCC bowls, said: “It is quite a big privilege for BCC to be chosen as one of the hosts of this prestigious tournament.

“The tournament comes to Ekurhuleni once every 10 years, so it is terrific to be a part of it.”

Brown added that the club was chosen as one of the hosts because of the excellent facilities available at BCC.

“Our facilities at the club are generally superior to most of the other clubs in the district,” he said.

“We have two bowling greens that are in good condition and we are also able to cope with the service and catering requirements of Bowls South Africa.

BCC welcomed a number of top bowlers from around the country including numerous Protea players who turned out on their greens over the course of the week.

When asked about the general condition of BCC’s greens at this time of the year, Brown said: “Most of the greens in Ekurhuleni have all been badly affected by the lack of rain earlier in the year,

“We are quite lucky here at BCC, because we have water supplied by an irrigation system incorporated from the golf course.

“The downside, in a way is that our greens, because we water them quite a bit, are a lot heavier than say Edenvale, which is extremely slick.”
