Moodie delighted with second place finishes

Second spot was a common theme for Lakefield resident and triathlete Casper Moodie when he took part in the 2016 South African and African Triathlon Championships in East London on Sunday, March 20.

Moodie placed second in his age category, second overall and second in the African Championships.

The race started with a daunting double 750m loop sea swim.

“I came out the water in 12th position about a minute behind the leaders,” he said.

“I quickly found a good rhythm on the bicycle; the bike leg consisted of three 13.9km laps on a windy and somewhat hilly course, and after the first lap I was sitting in third position with first and second in close contact.

“I moved up to second place entering transition and was going into the run side-by-side with first place.

“We started off extremely fast and I could not keep the pace up as I knew the 10km run was going to get tough towards the end.

“I dropped back a few metres and made sure that I stayed clear of the third- and fourth-place athletes and managed to keep my position to the finish.”

He added that finishing the race second in age category, second overall and second in the African Championships is a dream come true.

“Hard work went into preparing for the race and it paid off,” he told the City Times.

“All of this could not have been possible without my sponsors Irwin Wheels, FiT Sports Lab, SecondSkins and all my family and friends for their endless support.”
