Weeks showcases sprinting strength

Nicholas Weeks, a former Benoni High School pupil and member of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club (ERK), participated in the South African Canoe Sprint Championships recently.

The championships were held at the Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu-Natal.

Weeks participated in the K1 class 200m, 500m and 5 000m canoe sprint races.

It was the Benonian’s aim to take gold in the 200m event, but he was beaten into second place by a mere 0.3rd of a second.

He went on to paddle in the K2 class 200m event with a paddling colleague, David Rodrigues.

In this event the two outpaced their rivals to take first place and the gold medal.

Their success in this event has earned the duo a chance to represent South Africa at the upcoming Canoe Sprint World Championships being held in Milan, Italy, in August.

Weeks also won a silver medal for overall second place in the sprints for the weekend.

At present he is also training to be part of the South African canoe polo team, which will be going to Spain later in the year.
