On Saturday, March 5, in Delville, coach Raymond Cloete’s men enjoyed the best start to their season with a tough 2-1 win.
Despite their opponents opening the scoring about 30 minutes into the first half on a breakaway, Cloete’s team rallied to get the result.
The coach’s talismanic striker from last season, Bilal Hajee Mohammed, whose sublime goal-scoring spree was halted by injury, was back to his old scoring ways as he netted the equaliser courtesy of a volley struck from outside the box.
The crafty Lesiba Modau gave the Benoni outfit the lead following some good interplay and one-two football with his Bens teammates.
Germiston will be kicking themselves after they missed a penalty that would have forced the draw.
“I believe that our boys played to only 60 per cent of their potential, but to get a win in the opening game of the season is sufficient at this stage,” said Cloete.
“We have brought some new players into the squad and will hopefully strengthen it further.”
- Meanwhile, in the opening Reserve League clash between the same clubs it was Old Bens who made it a successful outing for the club as they romped to a thumping 6-1 win over Germiston.
Both teams will play their first home matches of the season at Currin Park on Saturday, March 12, versus an always strong Highlands Park.
