Buys: ‘I will raise my hand at the end’

“I am a different fighter now.”

These are the words of Benoni resident JP Buys who returns to the hexagon at EFC 47 tomorrow night (Saturday, March 5), to square up against Potchefstroom’s Roevan de Beer at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena in a preliminary flyweight card bout.

The Fight Fit Militia (FFM) gym fighter is hoping to make his third professional fight count as he seeks nothing but victory.

Following a disappointing defeat in his second EFC fight at Durban’s International Convention Centre in August last year to Baldwin Mdlalose via rear-naked choke, the former amateur champion vowed to bounce back from that loss.

Speaking to the City Times, Buys certainly sounded confident ahead of his cage date with de Beer.

“I am expecting my hand to be raised at the end of the fight,” said Buys.

“Since my last fight I have matured so much in the MMA game.

“My training has intensified and I have been spending more hours in the FFM gym – 7am to 7.30pm – every day.”

On what to expect from de Beer, Buys said, “I am expecting him to bring everything he has to the fight and I know that he will come hard at me as I have beaten him before in the amateur ranks.”

With regard to a return to his home base at Carnival City, Buys said, “It is amazing to be back at Carnival fighting in front of my people.

“I cannot wait to hear them shout the roof off the place as I give them a fight they won’t forget.”
