Springs in a spin at Northerns

In years gone by, Springs Old Boys always proved to be a tough proposition for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club (BNCC) in the Eastern Premier League.

On Sunday, February 7, the visiting Springs outfit were a far cry from the old days as they were totally dominated with both bat and ball by BNCC at Northern Areas.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the visitors were made to chase leather in the field as Northerns ran riot with the willow, despite the early loss of opening batsman Rhenier Jordaan for six runs.

Easterns semi-professional and talented left-handed opening batsman Ernest Kemm again proved his immense quality as he top-scored with 125 runs and BNCC posted a mammoth 302/6 on the scoreboard.

He was followed by number three batsman Shane Nel, who scored 84 runs.

All-rounder Regardt Verster continued from his Man-of-the-Match antics in the Benoni cricket derby, last weekend, and again proved that he is an excellent acquisition for the club, with a memorable, blisteringly quick 52 runs off 20 deliveries.

With grey and gloomy skies forming overhead, the BNCC brains trust knew that they would need to reach at least 20 overs in their bowling innings in order to constitute a match and enforce the Duckworth-Lewis method if required.

Those concerns proved unnecessary, as the Springs batting line up was quickly wrapped up by the 21st over, with a mere 32 runs on the board to ensure a more than convincing four-wicket bonus point win for Northerns, just before the rain did eventually fall.

Stiaan Jordaan, who claimed six scalps with his spin in the teams’ reverse encounter in Springs, in November, last year, again picked up the very same haul of wickets, with sublime statistics of 6/18 in 10 overs.

Lee Cothill, Kemm and Stefan Jordaan each picked up a Springs stick (along with a run-out) to secure the all-important win.
