Aggressive Actonville achieve a win

A number of Eastern Cricket Union club cricket matches were affected by wet wickets and outfields over the weekend.

Some clubs, however, did manage to get matches played.

This was the case at Lords Cricket Grounds, where the Premier League encounter between Actonville Spurs and Boksburg cricket clubs was played on Sunday, January 24.

Actonville won the toss and decided to field on an overcast morning.

The hosts bowled exceptionally well throughout the Boksburg innings and the only real form of resistance from their Boksburg opponents came from Aubrey Swanepoel, who scored 32 runs.

Xolile Nkomo (3/23) and Hussain Shakeel Ahmed (3/30) enjoyed the overcast conditions and were successful with their seam bowling.

The visitors could muster a score of only 134 runs.

Actonville, under the new guidance of head coach Thomas Pekane, came into the chase with an aggressive approach in their pursuit of the 135-run target from their openers, Vysan Govender (47 runs) and Curtly Wewers (19 runs)

Their combative batting style saw them chase down the score, despite the fall of three wickets in 21.4 overs.

This secured a seven-wicket, bonus-point victory for the team.

The good result will give them oodles of confidence heading into the Benoni Cricket Derby against Benoni Northerns Cricket Club, at Lords, on Sunday, January 31.

  • The club has opened ticket sales to their banquet and awards function on Saturday, April 16.
