Promos win with ease

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Promotion XI ended the first half of the Eastern Promotion League campaign with a mammoth victory over Duduza, on Sunday, December 6.

Skipper Jaco Kruger’s team never gave their opponents a fighting chance on the day.

Batting first, the Northerns team blitzed their way to 362/9 after 50 overs.

Despite losing three quick wickets, a brilliant partnership between Matthew Wright and Tian van der Walt helped steer them to a huge total.

Wright played shots all over the field and scored a quick fire 78 runs before he was dismissed in the 18th over.

Van der Walt played a patient knock before attacking the Duduza bowlers to put up an impressive score of 141, which his captain described “as one of the best 100s that I have seen anyone score in 15 years as a club cricketer.”

Twayne Stewart and Joshua Thomas were the next best batsmen on the scoreboard, with 36 and 28 not out respectively.

The home side cleaned up the Duduza order with ease after lunch (61 all out in 21.3 overs), with Kruger and Lee Cothill (returning to club cricket after a long injury lay off) doing most of the damage.

The skipper picked up figures of 3/23 in 10 overs (26 wickets in the first half of the season), while Cothill achieved statistics of 2/35 in 10 overs.

Their opponents scored 196 runs and wrapped up the hosts just two runs shy of the target.

Ridwaan Daya scored 66 runs on the day, but it wasn’t enough for his side.
